Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Founded in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship where students who seek to explore a different culture or deep dive into a language near to their heart, this is the scholarship for you. This international scholarship chance is to help lower income undergraduates who may otherwise never have the ability to intern abroad. The gift of being able to study in a whole different country allows a U.S. student to either become proficient in a language and being able to become a translator or bilingual teacher. This opportunity is even great for students who want to become a doctor or a red cross nurse.

This program affects and helps students who have been the most economically effected or impacted. These are the students who are overlooked and, in the end, find a way to succeed far beyond most. Anyone can read through their alumni to see there incredible achievements.

Applying means entering a highly competitive experience

Similar to other federal scholarship and awards, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is no different, this is a very highly competitive pool of applications. But what about general eligibility and requirements?

  • Attending or accepted to an accredited college (any student can find out by going to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship website to check if their school it or not)
  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program
  • A student who has been given an internship
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be an undergraduate
  • A student must in the process of applying to, or accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program, or a program called “virtual international” of at least two weeks for community college students and three weeks for students from four-year institutions. Multi-country, multi-area, and multi-city programs are eligible and have no minimum requirement on length of time spent in one country, city, or area
  • A student can only apply to a Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 country

There is a separate section for non-competitive federal employment individuals who have applied as students using the application process, but for the next year if you are chosen for the reward, you have the ability to be given a federal internship. Depending on the agency, the student will be able to apply for an open position with their resume and experience background. Check the scholarship website for more on this subject.

Eligible for an entire year

That’s right, your scholarship is valid for an entire year and that means covering every cost that comes your way as a student. Fees, books, housing, and tuition. This is a federal grant that was named after congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, which means that this will act as a sort of Federal Pell Grant.

Deadline times

Currently the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship has two deadline times. March and October of 2021, so this allows students enough time to submit in an application.
